Re: Rental application — 3-room apartment, Musterstrasse 5, 8004 Zürich Dear Sir or Madam, My name is Anna Meier and I am writing to apply for the apartment listed above. We are a couple — my partner and I. I work as software engineer at Acme AG since March 2024, on a permanent contract. Our gross household income comfortably meets the customary one-third rule for this rent. We are non-smokers and have no pets. The apartment is ten minutes from my office, and we are looking for a long-term home. I could take over the apartment from 1 September 2026. Enclosed you will find: completed application form, copy of ID / residence permit, debt register extract (Betreibungsauszug), last three salary slips. I would be happy to answer any questions and look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Anna Meier
Do's and don'ts
Do state household, employment and move-in date plainly; do mention pets up front; do keep it to half a page. Don't write your life story, don't promise above-asking rent, and don't leave gaps a complete dossier would answer.
Frequently asked questions
Do Swiss agencies even read cover letters?
For private landlords and competitive listings — yes. The letter will not save an incomplete dossier, but between two complete files it often decides who gets the viewing callback.
How long should the letter be?
Half a page. Facts agencies care about — household, employment, income reliability, move-in date — plus one personal sentence. Emotional essays hurt more than they help.
Is my data stored?
No. The generator runs in your browser; the letter exists only on your screen until you copy or download it.
